He died at his house in Oxfordshire on the 4th September, 1588, probably from stomach cancer, at the age of about 56 (the exact date of his birth is not known, except that he was born in or around the same year as the Queen).

He was a great favourite of Queen Elizabeth's - she had several pet names for him - and she kept "his last letter" by her always, in a casket. There was also a scandal concerning him when his wife, Amy Robsart, was found dead at home at the foot of the stairs.

He married Lettice Knollys, a cousin of Elizabeth I, much to the queen's displeasure. However, he died in bed with his head still securely attached to the rest of his body, and his stepson, Essex, was one of Elizabeth's favorites in her later years.
