It didn't fail emissions from a hole in the exhaust! That falls under inspection guide lines. It failed because it emits levels of polution beyond the standard permitted. Probably needs a good tune up and you can also buy additives at your local auto parts store to help it pass the test! Think you have to do something or you're just plain out of luck on this one!

there may be ways to repair the exhaust without replacing the whole system depending on where the hole is ,how big it is and what condition the rest of the system is in welding it or using an epoxy that is designed for exhaust temperatures are possible or if it is on a straight piece of pipe you can cut out the section where the holes are and replace it with what is called an adapter if it is the muffler most likely it will need to be replaced and a soup can is not a legal way to repair an exhaust system
emission test check for O2 in the system to make sure there are no leaks why that is mostly what oyu failed on
remember the reason the exhaust system is there and ran the way it is ,is to direct the exhaust gasses away from the passenger compartment carbon monoxide is an odorless tasteless invisible killer that will put your lights out permanently

Well jareihart,
You just gave him the idea to fix it with a soup can.
Here are the remaining steps. Open both ends of the can, toss the lids. Slit the soup can down the side and secure it over the offending pipe hole with U-bolts or large hose clamps.

it wont fail emissions because of a hole in the muffler. try changing the oil. my car didnt pass and i have an '88 Daihatsu Charade. i changed the oil and i passed with flying colors. try changing the O2 sensor too. then go to checker or auto zone and get some emissions pass. its something you pour in the crank case and it helps your car pass. good luck

that "little hole" as you said, CAN KILL!!!
are you smokin' crack???
as exhaust gas is toxic, a child sleeping in the back seat whilst you are driving can die from carbon mon-oxide poisoning, or it can make you fall asleep causing you to hit someone head on...you would risk a kids life or anybody on the road just to save some money. YOU ARE A TWIT!!!
AND TRYING TO RIG IT WITH A SOUP CAN WOULD MAKE YOU A DOUBLE TWIT, FOR LISTENING TO A TWIT!!!

If it is just a little hole, like an inch or less, use JB WELD
