Does anyone know if this car has a cam belt and if so, at what mileage should it be replaced? Apparently the Diesel 1800CC model is a rare beast.

Also, the car has a really weird noise. At low revs, a faint noise can be heard - sounds like a old style telephone dialing at a slightly higher pitch. Also, if I hit the brakes, the brake pedal feels like it is snatched back, just as the car comes to a halt. The front discs were recently replaced.

Many thanks for any help given.

Yes it has a cam belt. I'd suggest it at 60,000 miles, The ringing noise maybe the teeth on your flywheel hitting the inspection cover on your transmission.
Make sure it's bolted on correctly, and doesn't have dents in it..This noise can transfer itself in to the engine compartment and make it sound like it's coming from somewhere else. This is usually what makes a sound like a bell like you described.
The brake thing your feeling in your pedal is probably the brake booster. It's what your mastercylinder bolts to. It's either bad or is losing vacuume to it somewhere in the engine compartment..

I had 2 litre diesel Primera - Cam belt changed was 60k miles. Never heard of an 1800cc version. Brake snatch could be a servo problem or loose caliper. Diesels make odd noised when idling

I think it may have a cam chain which doesn't need changing (mine had one), but you better check with a professional.

Not sure about your telephone sound - could it be a vibration somewhere. Regarding your brakes, I would take them back to the people who replaced them for you if you are not happy with them. Don't forget, new brakes need to 'bed in' for a while. Hope this helps!
