Proof-reading is the process of finding imperfections in the copy before it goes to press, rather than after.

In an ideal world, the copy will have been thoroughly edited at an early stage, and that process will have applied a consistent editorial style. All the proof-reader has to do then is spot things that have slipped through the net.

In the real world, the copy-editing process is often skimped or skipped, or corrections are made during the production process which introduce new problems.

Reliable proof-reading requires exceptional powers of concentration, which most non-specialists simply don’t have.

Proof reading's when you check an article/essay/document over for grammatical and spelling mistakes. For example, if I checked the wording of your question out, I'd suggest that you used the word 'explain' rather than 'explained'

Proofreading means reading a proof copy of a text in order to detect and correct any errors.

Proofreading consists of reviewing any text, hardcopy or electronic copy (on a computer), against an original document and checking for formatting errors, grammar, spellings and typos.

Proof reading is when you read something and check for mistakes. If I was to proof read your question then I would suggest you changed 'explained' into the present tense.

It's proofreading, not proof reading. It means going back over your work for mistakes before submitting or turning it in.

It's what most people on Yahoo do not do before submitting answers and questions. If they proofread they would see all the glaring mistakes they have made and correct them before they sent their thoughts out to the world.
