We have no life, per se, in the evenings during the week, so we rent a lot of movies. Pathetic, I know. Preaching to the choir here. Anyway, what's a good movie you've rented lately?

Without knowing your taste, this is a tough question to answer. However, I will recommend some movies that most people seem to like, but very few people have ever seen.

1. Queen Margot

Court intrigue, intense love scenes, daring swordplay, poisonings, and one scary massacre. Far more thrilling than the title would suggest to an American audience. The film is French and based on a book by Dumas (the same guy who wrote the Three Musketeers), who based his book on real incidents during the wars between the Protestants and the Catholics in France. Very romantic, and the Catherine de Medici villainess is one of the best villains I've seen on the screen.

2. In the Mood for Love

I like Wong Kar-Wai films, but they're not for everyone. So this recommendation comes with a grain of salt. It's a very atmospheric mood piece -- beautiful cinematography set to heartwrenching music -- about two neighbors who realize their respective spouses are having an affair together. Sad and romantic, but ... leisurely. (Slow is the wrong word for it. It's just not in a hurry.)

3. The Wind and the Lion

This one's American, with Sean Connery as the last of the Barbary Pirates (yes, he plays an Arab, but fairly well), who has kidnapped an American woman and her two children. Teddy Roosevelt (expertly played by ... Brian Keith ...?) sends the Marines in to get them, but in the meantime the American captives befriend their captor and start dictating their own international policies. Also based (loosely) on a real event. This one is perhaps the most "fun" of my listings -- it's a popcorn flick, and a real audience pleaser.

4. Ong-Bak Thai Warrior

I'll offer this up for anyone who thinks In the Mood for Love is too slow. This one's a martial-arts flick out of Thailand, and it has some of the best stunt work I've ever seen. The opening sequence (the race in the tree, without the wires of Crouching Tiger -- people FALL) is worth the price of admission alone. Just as In the Mood for Love isn't for those with short attention spans, this is not for the squeamish -- it gets brutal.

5. House of Flying Daggers

A wuxia-themed film along the lines of Hero and Crouching Tiger, but not as well known for some reason, House of Flying Daggers blends rather intense romance with spectacular, almost fetishistic shots of arrows and stones flying through the air. It's a thrill to watch, just for the spectacle of it.

It depends on your taste. If you like romaintic chick flicks, and stuff like that, try The Notebook and Ghost. If you like Action/Thriller, try some M. Night Shylaman movies. If you like more Academy Award type of thing, try Hotel Rwanda, Million Dollar Baby, and Millions with Alex Etel. And finally, if you like animation (which i doubt) try pixar, chicken run, and Wallace and Gromit. But dont get Dreamworks.

"Grandma's Boy" .. it's hilarious! But I have to warn you, it's a "Happy Madison" production (as in, Adam Sandler had a hand in it, but thankfully, does not appear in it). Maybe it was only funny to me, but what other movie can put together video game nerds, marijuana, granny sex, and a primate and still manage to make sense?
