No its not mandatory. You can buy only domain name. But then a question arises in my mind, what will you do with it, if you dont want to host your site. If at all you want to host your site, dont go for Free hosting companies. All the free webhosting services seem to bother you with spam and/or advertising and/or pop-up windows and do not give you your own domain name. Also they have a very limited hosting space & monthly data transfer. Where as most of the paid hosting services offer disc space of only 5Gb & data transfer per month is 200Gb only. But a good hosting service like the one mentioned below gives you 50Gb hosting space & 999Gb data transfer per month. Secondly you ger a FREE domain & site builder to help you design your site. Charges are also very low ($3.95/ month) with 24/7 technical support.

They Support:
Streaming Video
Streaming Audio
Real Audio & Video Support
Flash Support
Macromedia Shockwave
MIDI File Support

No, they are mutually exclusive concepts .. you buy a domain name so your clients can find your website under your domain name, its a form of branding ... if the business you are going into is web-hosting, the domain name should reflect that (like myspace) ... if the business you are doing is accounting, then you would by a name reflecting that concept (like bottomline.com) the whole point to buying a domain name is to incorporate your business or personal name to identify your website (i.e., johndoe.com or widget.com)

There is a point in having your own domain name and just using it to email. You can always decide later to publish your own website or blog.

If you want to have a website you do need to have hosting. You don't have to get hosting through who you register your website through. There are many many choices for hosting. I would look for somebody with great uptime. Pricing varies depending on what kind of bandwidth you are looking for, but you can generally find hosting for reasonably cheap.

You don't have to, but there'd be little point in buying a domain if you don't plan on using it.

That's like buying landline phone service when you don't have a home to put it in.
