RE:
why did Jimmy Greaves not play in the 1966 world cup?

Get your facts straight, some of you!

Jimmy Greaves did have alcohol problems later in life, but to say that he was drunk the night before the final, forcing Sir Alf Ramsey to drop him, has no basis in fact.

As at least one person has said, Jimmy Greaves was injured in the group phase of the tournament. This led to Alf Ramsey selecting Geoff Hurst.

(In his recent book, Greaves says that he was personally disappointed not to be in the final, but that he has always maintained that Sir Alf did the right thing for the team in selecting a fully fit Geoff Hurst ahead of him).

So the reasons for Greaves not being imn the final are:
1) Sir Alf liked how Hurst and Peters played together, and it fitted with the pattern of play he wanted for his England team
2) Greaves was not fully fit
3) Hurst had scored for England in the Quarter Final
4) Sir Alf did not wish to change a winning team.

He did. He played in the opening game England against France and the remaining Group matches against Mexico and Uruguay. Geof Hurst took his place against Argentina in the Quarter Finals, the semi finals against Portugal and the final against West Germany.

The change over took place because Greaves picked up an injury.

He suffered an injury and Hurst came in and took his place and scored so could not be dropped and went on to win the world cup for West Ham, i mean England. The rest is history as they say.

He did play in the 66 world cup, but not in the final game. The manager-Alf Ramsey-dropped him for tactical reasons.
