You can thank our "feel good but learn nothing" public "screwl" system for that. Johnny can't spell and Becky can't add but they have high self esteem and that's what matters.

Because they don't spend enough time producing publishable writing. (Be publishable, I mean writing that they have perfected prior to making public.)

They aren't held to high standards in their writing. Most likely, they don't write very much at all, let alone re-write and re-write, and proof, and get feedback on and revise yet again.

Also, keep in mind that even people who DO know the difference mess up sometimes.

I, for example know the difference between its and it's, there, their, and they're, etc. yet sometimes I realize after the fact that I got one of them wrong.

Proofreading is HARD.

PS It wasn't until I was previewing this that I noticed I had written "do no" rather than "do know" -- fortunately I DID notice. This time. 'Cause that would have been embarrassing!

Public education run by the federal government. It works so well, we should nationalize our health care too! Seriously, the government does such a great job at everything (there's never any waste, or corruption, or outright failure), let's put our health and lives in their hands. Brilliant!

....disclaimer, for those of you with an I.Q. smaller than your shoe size, this is called sarcasm.

I have heard young people say that it is not important to know such things. I guess not many people value being thought of as intelligent and projecting themselves as educated, cultured individuals anymore. To me, there is no excuse for not knowing basic English grammar, and coming across to others as someone who has good communication skills.
