We have being the top dogs here for ever. Wouldn't another highly intelligent species make us feel almost violated even if they were friendly?

I really don't know what would happen, but it's a fascinating question. Check out "Childhood's End" by Arthur C. Clarke for a great story about such a situation.

I suspect the space aliens would have more trouble coping with us.

If a species is technologically advanced enough to get here from billions of miles away, it probably has eliminated war, poverty, diesease, and all the other problems that plague humans.

When the alien explorers climb out of their starship, they'll find a ring of soldiers with tanks and rifles, wearing biohazard suits... with that ring surrounded by an even larger mass of television reporters.

As soon as the aliens wave an appendage in greeting, the earthlings probably will think they're getting ready to shoot and blast them back to the next galaxy.

Of course, if the space aliens are smart enough to get here, they should be smart enough to land in a country that doesn't have much of an army... But if any of the locals have cell phones, it won't be long before the UN "peacekeepers" -- and the network news anchors -- are out in force.

I have always believed that if it were proven that aliens do exist, 10% of the population would go mad on the spot.
We have spent so long insisting that they can not exist that if they were to be revealed, many could not grapple with it.
How do we handle our relationships with lesser beings? Let that be a yardstick by which we are treated.

I'm betting if the truth really comes out that they are already here, 50% of the people will panic, 30% of them will then worship the aliens. Most rednecks will want to shoot them because they will prove that the christian/moslem/jewish/catholic god is false.
I think it would be a joy to have them and be able to learn from them, as long as they don't try to eat me.

Also assuming they would be more intelligent...it wouldn't bother me...there are alot of humans smarter than me, but I think people on the whole would feel inferior and therefore threatened.

Interesting question- I think we would be able to coexist with them, but we as humans are social by nature and tend to associate with people like ourselves. So there would probably be some mixed interaction between humans and aliens, but by and large I think after the novelty wore off, we would socialize mostly with other humans and they would socialize mostly with other aliens.

The power hungry would freak out, since they would now be second class. It would be very interesting to see if they would try to kiss alien a-s-s (if they had one).

I cope with less intelligent people all the time.

As long as they respect me...I respect in return.
