Any type of DVD writer will do. Cheap and cheerful. I take it you know where to go to get the movies.

Your best bet is to buy a DVD-RW burner, this type of burner will burn rewriteable DVDs (which are a special type of DVD which can be copied over many times like a Video Cassette). A DVD-RW burner will also burn standard DVD-Rs (Recordable DVDs) and they are usually not much different in price to standard DVD-R burners.

It is possible to burn movies onto a standard CD-R but the space on CDs (around 700mb) compared to the space on DVDs (around 4700mb) means a movie will have to be greatly reduced in quality for it to fit on a single disc. The higher the quality of the movie the more space it takes up on the disc. Nowadays CD burners are about the same price as DVD burners so go with the DVD burner. Most DVD burners will also burn standard CDs.

There are several good burners on the market, you can fins decent ones at Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc...

You should be able to find a 16x DVD Double-Layer burner for about 50-60 bucks. I've actually had more trouble with the brand name burners (Sony, TDK) than lesser-known names. LG, Memorex, and similar are all fine.

If you get one with Lightscribe, you can burn the labels on discs when you are done!

You do not need a burner to download movies. You only need a show case such as Windows media player or Real Player.
