Because they are cheap to make and take no imagination to come up with- But I do have a great idea for one-

Lets gather all the past, present, and future participants of all these over rated programmes-
Send them to the middle of the Gobi desert, bury them up to their necks in sand and see who lasts longest-

Tell you what, I'll even run a book on it to make it more interesting :oD

Because they can be produced cheaply - reality shows write themselves, so the producers don't need to pay writers; also, the participants don't get paid as they are trying to win something and will gladly participate for free. Soaps are also relatively cheap to produce, as they can use the same sets, costumes etc. for years, and the scripts don't take nearly as long to write as they do to act out (writers can lay out an entire year's plotlines in a week, it's just up to the underpaid actors to fill in the spaces). Soaps are shot very quickly, with no chance for second takes; also, there's no costly music, editing or special effects

Because it's cheap t.v and easy money for the stations. If it's what we wanted to watch why do you think there are so many people in Britain on this site at 9.30pm! T.V entertainment has gone out the window and now we're all trying to find something else to do with our time....I'd rather watch paint dry that watch all this reality crap full of talentless & pretentious t*ssers

It's not just a question of being CHEAPER. Producers don't have to worry a great deal about the QUALITY of the product. Ratings and cash are the only thing the suits see nowadays.

You should watch Discovery instead. Sometimes... something GOOD will actually appear.

Why is there so much trash on tv?? Because Somehow the networks decided we're all starving for entertainment and enjoy watching stupid people doing idiotic things. Personally I sold my TV 2 years ago and I haven't had one since.

there is no such thing as a 'reality' tv programme as it surely cant be possible to get 12 or so attention grabbing posers living in the same house or could you just be very unlucky?

because people aren't satisfied with their own lives so, they have to fill the void by watching other people. i don't even have cable, and i could tell you the names of the tribes on survivor, just because that's the only crap people ever talk about. i think it's pretty sad with all the important stuff that's going on the world that all society cares about is who's having a nervous breakdown on america's next top model.

Because television is lazy and staffed with idiots.
And that is why there are more people looking at a computer screen than TV right now.
The most inventive, clever and talented people want nothing to do with TV and it is dying.
Serves them right for serving up shite.

Because they are cheap to produce and attract a mass audience of people who should know better. They also create revenue from all the phone calls from gullible people ringing in.

Simple, because so many people watch these programs no matter how much we moan about them for some reason we still feel compelled to watch them
