as much as I hate to say it... and I hate the Yankees myself... the AL MVP has to be Derek Jeter this year. He has been the best all around consistent player all season. The MVP is not just the best hitter on a team (like the year Dawson won it for the last place Cubs... that was very unusual); the MVP is the player that helps a team get to the next level.

What? the Yankees needing help to get to the next level?
remember earlier in the season when Boston had a solid grip on the East and the Yankees were behind three teams in the Central for the Wild CArd spot? many were writing off New York.

Sheffield was hurt; Matsui busted up; the starting staff weak; no way they would make up the ground on any of these other teams.

Through all the injuries, the ARod slump/bashing/distractions, the up and down starting rotation, Rivera showing his age, the one thing that stayed steady all year (besides Torre), was JETER. He's having maybe his best year overall at a time when the Yankmees needed it most. As mush as I hate to say it, he's the reason they will end up with baseball's best overall record. He plays everyday at the most difficult position on the field and is clutch just about every time he's needed at the bat.

A very close second is Minnesota's Justin Morneau, who helped dig the Twins out of a HUGE early season hole to challenge for the Central title. He is the main cog in a lineup that continues to improve every day and is probably more scary than the Yankees on some days, because of its youth and agility. But the Twins also have the Cy Young winner (Santana) and almost had the ROY too with Liriano, until he got hurt. (Verlander will win the ROY for his complete year of pitching for the Tigers).

I really do love David Ortiz and would love to endorse him for the MVP, but he and the Red Sox tanked it in the end. You can't win the MVP and only play until August... if Boston would have won the East, he'd have an argument; even only being a DH (which is another strike against him).

Dye has too much other offensive firepower around him to single out for the MVP of the league. Once again, the White Sox missed the playoffs, which deals a blow to making one of them an MVP.

I know Frank Thomas WILL win the Comeback Player of the Year for sure. Nobody else is close! Awsome year by the future HOFer. You ROCK Big Hurt!!!

So to summarize the AL:
MVP = Jeter
Cy Young = Santana
Rookie of the Year = Verlander
Comeback Player of the Year = Thomas

If you look solely based on stats, you come to one of three possibilities. Justin Morneau (MIN) has been absolutely phenomenal the second half of the season and has some pretty impressive numbers (.323 BA 34 HR 129 RBI). Derek Jeter (NYY) is another good candidate, he is always a solid batter and is probably one of the best shortstops in the majors (.340 BA 19 HR 96 RBI). Another possibility, if you like great pitching is Johan Santana (MIN). His numbers are absolutely ridiculous (19-6, 2.77 ERA, 233.2 IP, 245 SO).

Andre Dawson of the Cubs got MVP in 1986 and you know about the Cubs history. They didn't make it to the playoffs but Dawson still got MVP. Your team doesn't need to be in the playoffs to be a canidate or winner of MVP. So it is not obvious that Dye or Ortiz don't have a good chance.

Not Ortiz or Dye. It should be Santana from the Twins. He's carried them this far without a second starter (Liriano). He should win. Maybe even Frank Thomas.

Big Papi will overcome the odds and win the AL MVP. Jeter will come in second.

You have a point. But it's not only based on how the team does. It's individual statistics. I think it's up for grabs still. Let's just see how the players play in these last days.
