About every 4th or 5th time I power up my laptop it stalls during the boot. It never gets to the "beep" to indicate it has sucessfully booted. I have to force a shutdown (hold power button for 5 sec.) to shut it off and start over. Can anyone tell me what the cause might be.

Possibly there is some loose hardware, this can be the memory or the HDD cos the stalling and the Beeps are part of the bootup process not proceeding ! u'll need to isolate the probem by one by one removing parts , par example u can remove the Hdd and try a few times to see if it stalls or not , it might give u HDD error but nonetheless it will not stall if that is not the problem , try a few things to get to the root of the problem.

I think hardware as well, and I'm very concerned about your hard drive. It may be some other hardware, so remove everything you can *easily* take off (CD drives, battery, extra memory, etc.) and see if that happens to solve the problem.

If you still can't find the problem, make a backup of everything important and download a hard drive test program off the Internet.
I like the utility listed below.

You did read the part about making a backup, right?

That happens to me some times when I wait to shut it down when the battery is depleted. It never completes the necessary steps and then on restarting, it doesn't boot successfully.
