The weather is really cold there. That is about it.

the simple principle that due to the Earth's rotation, and the magnetic core (molten metals, way below your feet) there is an alignment of magnetism through the earth. We are not discussing gravity here, although there is some relation. The constant stirring of the earths core and the heavy metal contained therin acts exactly as you might when attempting to magnetize something - you stroke the magnet along the target metal, and in doing so align atoms. What then of the earth, spinning so long? And the magnetic poles have reversed more than once. The only difference in the poles is a marginal (.002 percent) wobble. South Pole - land mass. North Pole - mostly water. Commonality - hmmm pick penguins or polar bears, neither exists at the actual pole. So my ultimate answer would be - both have no place for humans, stay away. you'd have a better time trying to live on Mars.

Cold weather, 90 degrees latitude, no longitude, no specific time zone, and both are part of the Earth's axis.
