In some circles, the word Zionist may mean something similar to "supporter" or "ally" but overall, it is understood to mean something negative.

It first surfaced in WW1 with "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" a scurrillous and invented document which said that the Brit government was in the pay of an international jewish conspiracy bent on world domination.
