P=2(l+w)=48
l+w=24
3w+w=24
4w=24
w=6
l=3w=18
so length=18' and width=6'

Width of the rectangle (say) = x ft.

Length of the rectangle = 3 times its width = 3x feet.

Perimeter of the Rectangle = 2 * (l + b)

= 2 * ( 3x + x)
= 2 * (4x)
= 8x ft.

8x = 48 ft (given)

So, x = 48 / 8 = 6 ft.

Width = 6 ft.
Length = 3x = 3 * 6 = 18 ft.

Answer : Width of the Rectangle = 6 feet.

VERIFICATION: (if the solution is right)

Perimeter = 2 * (l+b)
= 2 * ( 18 + 6)
= 2 * 24
= 48 ft.
So the solution is correct.

You will never learn anything by getting me to do your home work for you but here goes anyway.

if the length is 3 times the width and we call the width 'a'

we need 2 widths plus 3 times the width times two to make the perimeter, best expressed as:
2 a + 6 a = 48

then
8a = 48

thus a = 48/8

a = 6

width = 6
length = 3 x 6 = 18

total perimeter is 6+6+18+18 = 48

Voila !!!

let width of rectangle= x feet
so length of rectangle= 3x feet
perimeter(P)=2(L+B)
48=2(3x+x)
48=2(4x)
48/8=x
x=6
so width=6feet
length= 3*6
=18 feet

i assume you mean the length is 3 times the width, therefore:
width = x, length = 3x
perimeter = 2 width + 2 length =
2x + 2 (3x) = 2x + 6x = 8x
8x=48, x=48/8=6
width=6ft, length=18ft
check 2(6)+2(18)=48

permit width of rectangle = w in and length of rectangle = l in so length = (3w - 4) in Perimeter P = 2w + 2l = 2w + 2(3w - 4) so 2w + 2(3w - 4) = 40 2w + 6w - 8 = 40 8w = 40 8 w = 6 so length = 3(6) - 4 = 18 - 4 = 14 in

6 ft....set it up like this 2(3x+x)=48 simplify the middle and that gets you 2(4x)=48 divide by 2 4x=24...x is the width

length=18ft width=6ft
because
P=2(l+w)=48
l+w=24
3w+w=24
4w=24
w=6
l=3w=18
