I'm confused, does it originate in "English Law" or the "BIBLE"

Yes sommerluv, I agree that Daisy is on the right track, but I thought it was English Common Law. Regardless we can't blame this one on the Muslims.

I heard it originated with the Norse people (maybe?). They weren't allowed to beat their wife with anything thicker than their thumb.

It is from the Bible.......There were two different measurments .. one was from ur elbow to ur tip of middle finger.. the other one was called a handspan and went from ur middlefinger tip to the tip of ur thumb my understanding is that is where the saying comes from
but i have never heard of the English law thing



- Now that I read that.. Yes I remember the Beating ur wife thing.. Yes that is where it came from.. But the thing about the bible is true... it just is not where the expression came from!!!! I had forgotten all about that... The law was.. it was considered abuse if u beat ur wife with anything thicker than ur thumb....

there are many theories on this but none I have seen have anything to do with the bible
