Well, at some stores people do bag their own groceries. Such as Town & Country Supermarket and Aldi's. The store makes this as their policy so that they can keep the prices of grocery items down. These type of stores either have better sales or lower prices on a regular basis. This way comparison shopping is much easier and less of a hassle for their regular customers. And regular customers will continue to shop there because they know that the store has the lowest price. As to speed...depends on the person. If by chance a person has a lot of groceries or are elderly it may take a couple extra minutes for them. Which is fine and usually works out quite well, actually, because there are two conveyer belts at the end of the lanes. First person gets first row and second person gets the second row.
Hope this helps :)

There are some grocery stores where you do bag your own. In my experience it is not faster because the people that end up in front of me are:
mothers with 6 kids,
elderly people that can't seem to find the exact change,
two neighbours that miraculously ended up at the same store at the same time and feel the need to stop and talk about how funny it is that they are both in need of food,
You see where I'm going here. It is much better to have a trained professional do it for you :)

Not really b/c you have to pay them and bag at the same time. All supermarkets should have ppl that bag groceries for the customers that will make the lines go faster.

They do that at some of the lower budget grocery stores. I remember a time when every line actually had a bagger at the end of the lane. Usually it was some kid who needed a few bucks in his pocket and he was happy to do it. Kids nowadays don't even want to carry groceries into the house.

I grew up in Canada and currently in London.

Back home people are paid to pack your groceries for you.

Here in England, you do it yourself and even in some stores like Lidl's you pay for the bag.

I don't necessarily agree that packing them yourselves makes it any faster. Probably if you're used to it but for me it takes longer. So what I normally do is just pay for them, and stack them into my trolley and then on the side I would bag them or straight to the car at times.

Also I think its not the baging thats taking a long time, sometimes its getting prices or just simply poor customer service.

My advice is that if you have persistent problems about queuing in your local grocers then its time to look for another one which provides better service.

I don't know where all you guys are from, but here in MN we bag our own groceries. You don't do it while you are being rung up but after. That way you can check the prices, pay and then you go to the end of the conveyor belt and bag up your stuff. We have 2 conveyor belts per cashier so while one is baggin the other customer is being run up. If you need help baggin they can get someone from customer service to help you.

I always bag my own groceries. Some clerks just put everything together, like loaf of bread and bag of potatoes in the same bag. The bread always get ruined and smashed....

Some grocery stores to do that in exchange for cheaper prices.. But I think it sucks..

If I am going to pay the prices they charge me..I expect service and good service...

Its sorta like going to a $50 dollar plate dinner resturant and having to get up and cook your own steak!

no. the cashier or bag boy need to bag groceries so the customer can make sure everything is ringing up as they expected (like making sure they get a discount) and to be able to pay while the bagboy finishes bagging.
