I see a lot of people that are curious about people of different cultures, but I have always wondered if they ever took the time to ask such a person themselves or get to know something about their culture.

I agree with you so much. I think that if we all took the time to know each other then maybe their would be more compassion in this world.

I've come to the conclusion that a majority of people who ask race based questions here really are not interested in a genuine answer at all. They already have their pre-conceived prejudices and they are basically just looking for someone to "co-sign" on their racist views.

I've often wondered the same thing. For example, I've seen plenty of circumstances where someone would ask a question about a black person. Many people will answer. A few blacks... but mostly whites... usually with some kind of stereotype. Like they would really know how a black person feels, or why they do the things they do.

So yeah... I don't really think a lot of these people are sincerely curious about other cultures, otherwise they would someone of that culture.

Some people have such thin skin that they may perceive an attempted at gaining knowledge as a racist remark, when in fact the other person was just genuinely curious. Such tensions give people reservations and therefore to keep an uneasy peace, they prefer not to bother with such efforts.

racism is made such a big thing these days - i think people can be really frigid about talking to people of different races - practically anything can be taken the wrong way and then you're in BIG trouble! But i agree, we should be more open minded about this.

Well in answer to a previous comment i must be in the minority, i am not here to plug my own views on race i genuinely want to know other peoples opinion.

I personally dislike being generalised as "white", my family are from many different places in the world, from France, Spain, Ireland, Scotland, Holland, and probably more i don't know? Why should we focus on race, we are all human we are all equal.

I don't want to generalise about any race. I find it difficult to comment on many different races of people because i don't know enough about them all to give an informed view, but i am trying.

I think it is important for us to listen to what other races have to say and to receive what they have to offer us. We may not agree, it may not fit into our "box" of beliefs and our way of life, but we must listen. We must listen so we can understand each other, there is no way forward without understanding.

I wish people would make the effort to get to know people from different backgrounds, but people get tunnel vision they focus on what happens on their back doorstep and to hell with the rest of the world. They are missing out on a fabulous world of different backgrounds and ways of life.

Often people are afraid of offending others by asking a dumb question (a Jewish guy I was working with asked our Lebanese colleague if he believes that suicide bombers go to heaven... I told him that asking a question like that is like asking Jews if they really killed Jesus! He got it.). Also, people often discourage others from learning. In my high school almost half the students were from India or born of Indian parents, but none of the white kids would dare join the Bhangra club. One white girl dared say she liked an Indian song and people were shocked, like only Indian people are allowed to like that music.

In short, people are afraid of rocking the boat and opening themselves up to ridicule.

If they did then they would not have anything to be racist about, they would see first hand that people from other cultures and races have more in common than not. And they would have no more basis for their hate.

Its human nature to be curious but standoffish at the same time.
