Try almost any book by Terry Pratchett - he's incredibly funny and clever. Look out for "Wee Free Men" to start with, if you haven't read a book in ages - this one is aimed at the young adult audience, but is good enough to be read by any age.

Something that is quite palatable to start with (and lovely to boot) is JD Salinger's, Catcher in the Rye. Everyone should read it once.
If you like horror, Steven King's, The Stand.
For comedy, Carrie Fischer's, Postcards from the Edge. Hilarious. So is the movie with Shirley McLaine and Meryl Streep.
Or for comedy, A Confederacy of Dunces--LOL! And it takes place in the old New Orleans.

BTW: War and Peace is a good read and great literature as are some of the above, but would probably turn you off from reading forever if you read that the first time you read a whole novel.

DEFINETELY read ALL of James Patterson, Dean Koontz and King. Patterson and Koontz will have u hiding under the bed like a 3 year old afraid of the boogey man! lol All 3 r awesome writers and easy to read! Just be ready to not be able to put the book down- thats how GOOD these authors are. Scary-horrro and a little action all rolled into one! I love to read and have read every single bok all 3 has ever written! You'll love them! ANY titles from any of these 3 authors are fabulous books so it would be tough to pick out just a few. Silent Prey by Patterson is awesome and Servants of Twilight is great and spooky as hell from Koontz. Look up the authors namees and just start going thru all their books so u wont miss a single great book!

There are alot of good books out there to read and I would suggest for horror SOME of Steven Kings works... especially his older ones. His books seem to babble and drag on after a bit and the rate that he pumps them out really makes me wonder.
Some suggested King titles are
Rose Madder
Carrie
Pet cemetary
Insomnia
those are just some suggestions...He did write a few other good books.
Other good books are the Harry Potter series...
Eragon series by Christopher Palionli (sp)
Anne Rice is a talented writer as well....Her son tried, I read the book and well I feel, he failed.
Anyway those are just a few suggestions. I would put a star by the Eragon series and the harry potter series. Definatly worth the time.

i was in the same spot. the best thing that i would do would be do follow this checklist

1) get in a very comfortable relazing position before you read
2) try to prevent abstractions - turning tv off so you can focus, putting phone off mute, etc.
3) set goals. example. say this session you want to accomplish reading a minnimum of 5 pages or more. If you reach this, and say u meet the goals for a week, then bump it up to 6, etc. you wil be amazed at the progress you will make.

in terms of what to read, i would do the following. think of a movie that you really really liked, and find out if that was available or based off a book. once u have the artist name, then pick another book by the same artist.

good luck, and happy reading

The Chronicles of Narnia (C.S. Lewis), Running Out of Time (Margaret Peterson Haddix), The Phantom of the Opera (Gaston Leroux). If you like funny books I would suggest A Series of Unfourtunate Events (Lemony Snicket). They are pretty goofy books, but very funny, even if they ARE kids books. The Princess Bride (Abridged by William Goldman) is pretty good as well.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.
The Partner by John Grisham
A Short History Of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson (in case you only ever read one!)
The Da Vinci Code (its just a story, albeit a very engaging one)
The Magus by John Fowles (after you've read something else)
For comedy A Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy

Try Stephen King.
His books are definitely horror, and usually have some sarcastic humour to accompany it.
I liked Dreamcatcher -- A sci-fi feel to it.
About friends with a telekinesis thing going on, and they must stop a race of disgusting aliens.
Find it at the library, along with dozens more of his titles!

The ultimate Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams...this is a collection of books that are very funny, sci-fi kind of books. (you may have seen the movie, but it's just not the same...the movie misses SO much!)

"ERAGON" By Christopher Paolini, it is amazing that this 15 year old decided to write this book, that he and his father published themselves. There is a web site that tell more about him www.alagaesia.com. I don't really remeber the whole story, but I believe someone read his self published book and decided to publish him. It is a great book.
