I have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), and I'm 22 and on Desogen, Metformin, and Spironalactone. The Spironalactone was for the excess hair, but when I moved and talked to another doctor she said it was a diuretic, and to help keep water weight down. Any ideas?

I was diagnosed when I was about 15, and have been on these 3 medicines since then. What are my chances of concieving when the time comes? Does anyone know of an online forum or support group for PCOS patients? I know it's not like breast cancer or anything like that, but it still effects my daily life.

Oh, and any weight loss ideas? Losing weight with PCOS is as easy as sticking a watermelon up my nose.

I was finally diagnosed with PCOS after many, many trips to the doctor. I was treated for everything from depression to anxiety to panic attacks to hormonal imbalances to you name it. I was also put on Spironalactone for excessive hair growth. It can also be used as a diuretic in which it makes you urinated more frequently. Androgen-lowering spironolactone (Aldactone), which is a diuretic. It is often used with estrogen-progestin therapy. This improves hair loss, acne, and abnormal hair growth on the face and body (hirsutism).

Metformin (Glucophage). This diabetes medicine is a newer PCOS treatment for controlling insulin, blood sugar levels, and androgen levels. This lowers your diabetes and heart disease risks and helps restore regular menstrual cycles and fertility.

As for the Desogen....... Estrogen and progestin birth control pills prevent ovulation. Functional ovarian cysts do not form without ovulation. Birth control pills can be used to treat women who have recurrent ovarian cysts with their menstrual cycles.

I'm sure if you speak to your doctor and let her know when you are ready to start having children she will start weaning you off of the birth control and go over the probabilities with you.

Dont let PCOS discourage you from planning a family in the future. I have had 3 children now and I am doing wonderful.

Hi Friend..

Hope U R Married n have desire 4 Child.. PCOS is not a life threatening problem, still it have it's discomforts. U may experienced many of them like Irregular periods, dysmenorrhoea, over weigh, such many problems R there. Most serious case is Threatened abortion..

I hop U kno things better than me. Medication U R taking might be having it's own reasons. Metformin is Hypoglycemic drug which is used to lower blood sugar level. But It is most sucessful drug 4 PCOS. U might be taking 500mg or 1gm. U may need to continue it 4 some months 2 several years. U said U've been taking it 4 more than 7yrs. Why didn't Docs go 4 a Surgery then? There might be some reason.
You are confused with Spironolactone. right? It's a Potassium sparing Diuretic. U might be having a lil High BP/oedema/some other Urinary Problems. That might be the reason of tht Prescription. There's no direct role 4 Spironlactone in PCOS as per my knowledge. U just ask UR Doc 4 confirmation.

Overweight is always associated with PCOS. It's so Difficult to lose weight in this situation.. Wat U can do is, stick 2 strict diet, do small excercises.. U can lose weight slowly, but may look obese.. Dont bother about Body shape.. It's the effect of the Hormone changes n Treatments.. Now a days Infertility treatments R so developed.. Do Consult SuperSpecialities..
May God Bless U 2 recover frm this condition n may all UR personal wishes come True..

Spironolactone is highly efficient against cirrhotic ascites. However, this is almost the only indication where it can be given to men. For all other cases, other drugs should be given preference because of the anti-androgenic effect of spironolactone. In women, the potassium-sparing potential can be exploited a bit better. Caution with renal failure!
