The chief sites are http://www.findlaw.com and http://www.lexisone.com (free registration required for the latter.) But if you haven't gone to law school or worked as a paralegal you are going to get frustrated looking up cases. And only cases on appeal show up.

I would suggest you do this: assuming you live in the USA go to your county law library. It will specialize in the law of your state. Ask the librarian for a TREATISE on criminal law. Look up the kind of offense in question; look up sentencing criteria.

Then gowith your friend (or, if he's never been found out, go by yourself) to the criminal court and spend a half-day. You can talk to people and ask questions. Not so much of the staff -- they aren't allowed to do more than tell you procedural details. But you might get friendly with lawyers and experts.

You will also get more confident once the majesty and the mystery of the court become second nature to you. Then your decisions will be more rational, less emotional, more informed.

Good luck.

ADDENDUM: Do NOT post any further details on Y! Q/A or anywhere else online. Prosecutors know how to use Google too, and Y! has a feed to Google. You should give the full facts only to your lawyer. Only conversations with your lawyer are privileged. Your IP and your identity can be traced by anyone with reason to do so.

A free site that you can look at is www.findlaw.com. There are also other sites that you can search such as www.lexisnexis.com and www.westlaw.com but you have to have an account with them to use them. I was able to access them through school so I am not aware of the price...but I hear it is not cheap. The thing about looking up a case that is similar to the one your friend is facing...is to make sure it is up to date...if it is within the same jurisdiction...if you live in Florida and the case you find is for Michigan it will not help you. Good Luck!
