I have experimented with this doing it both ways...one year I left it quite long.... BIG MISTAKE.... the next year I shaved it almost down to the ground... the shaving it worked great and in spring my lawn took right off.
When I had left it longer..it had gotten matted down and killed some spots... they cam back after quite some time but did not look good for awhile.

You could start to cut it shorter now. Typical summer height is 2.5 - 3"
You could go to 2 1/4 and by mid October go to 2" if you can get through it. If you have alot of thatch, it'll be tough to cut it that short and you may need to stay at 2 1/2"
The height is measured on level cement , from the cement to the bottom edge of the blade.

Keep your grass 2 1/2 to 3 inches in height all year round. I stop cutting after the first frost.
