That kinda depends. Ideally, you should try to get all the instruments together at the same time, but on separate tracks. If you can only do a couple of instruments, do the bass and drums together - the bass guitar and bass drum should lock in together and that's easier to do if the two players look at each other as they play.
I'm assuming that you're talking about a regular rock/pop/country song, not classical music or bluegrass even.

Depends. Here's what I do. First I figure out the arrangement before I start to record. Then I record a guide track consisting of acoustic guitar with metronome (this could be whatever instrument you want-guitar, keys, etc). Next, I record (or program in my case) the base drum track followed by bass, then I pile on the guitars and keys followed by vocals. I record backup vocals and harmony vocals last. Your original guide recording can either be used or discarded however you see fit. I'm sure this process varies from person to person.

I would record the drums. That's what sets the tempo for the entire song and if the drums are off , then the entire song is off and you've pretty much blown the whole thing and will have to start over!

Generally drums and bass come first, I usually let the drummer and bassist run through the songs together a few times, and just pick their favorite takes of their parts.
I then record rhythm guitar and keyboard, followed by lead vocals, background vocals, and then finally lead guitar.

to my knowledge, the drum track is usually the first to go down, while the others are recorded as scratch tracks. Then the other instruments can record to the drum track..thats the way I have always done or seen it done.
