I have a skin disorder called psoriasis I was wondering if any moms out there have heard if it is not ok to breast feed with this type of skin condition. I know they say it is something I am lacking in my immune system so I was wondering if my baby will get all the proper nutrients if I go a head and do it. also I have no and psoriasis on my breast now is there a good chance I may develop it there from cracked or dry nipples. I do plan to ask the doctor just wondering if anyone has experienced this before thanks for the advise

as long as you keep your nipples clean and lubricated there will not be a problem. Do ask your doctor what would be in you and your baby's best interest...good for you for thinking about breast feeding.

Psoriasis is a pretty common skin issue. It should not effect your ability to breastfeed or the nutrients that are in your breastmilk. You most definitely will not be able to pass it to your baby thru your milk or physical contact. From your comments I'm not quite sure if you have it on your breast already or not, but if you do not have it on your breasts there might be no reason to worry that it will show up there. The typical places for it to show up is on the elbows and knees or near those areas. My husband has had psoriasis flare-ups for years. Through trial and error he has finally discovered that he has a sensitivity to petroleum products. Whenever he gets gasoline on his hands or uses lotions with petroleum based ingredients he has a flare-up.

Just use lanolin cream (such as Lansinoh) on your nipples and be sure to have your Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or La Leche League Leader check your positioning and latch. This will help to prevent getting dry and/or cracked nipples.
I'm not aware of any reason that psoriasis would prevent you from breastfeeding. I'd suggest talking to your doctor and ALSO to an IBCLC (they know much more about nursing than most doctors).

Use Lansinoh lanolin ointment to prevent dry or cracked nipples. It's safe for baby. I would think that your baby is still getting many other nutrients from the breastfeeding. I guess the one concern would be if he could be exposed to the psoriasis and you should definitely ask your ob/gyn about that.

According to an article http://www.webmd.com/hw/psoriasis/hw58552.asp, the risk of developing psoriasis includes any type of skin injury, so i would assume that you could get it on your nipples if they start to crack and/or bleed. For sure talk to your doctor, it may or may not be ok to breastfeed, or you might need to treat it a certain way or monitor it or have it monitored by your doctor to make sure it does not cause problems for your baby.

If you put any type of cream or lotion on your breasts, it might get into your baby's system.
