make a formal request detailing exactly what information you want (eg rather than saying i want to know all the information on the council budget say, i want a copy of the budget sheet for x department for such and such a year.)

You will need to put your request in writing but I don't know how much it will cost.

Best advice is to phone your council or police station and ask them how they would like to receive any requests. There will be some information that they will NOT give you - matters of national security and anything protected by data protection - for instance if you asked for certain details about me, they wouldn't be able to give them unless they are subject to public record - in which case you could access them anyway!

You can write to either (you may have to find out the right dept) and request any copies of files or documents relating to yourself. They have an obligation under the freedom of information act to provide you with the information. If they refuse or decline then they are breaking the law

if you send them a letter requesting the information you require is enough. They are a few restrictions but as long as it is a reasonable request they should give you it. If not consult a lawyer.

freedom of information is a misnomer as you have to pay for the information you are 'free' to view. you are only given freedom to view the information they want you to view. we are living in a dictatorship, the evidence is there for those who wish to see it. that is the only free information you need.
