I take music very seriously because it is the most expressive form of communication that we have, and also, to be less esoteric, because there's a lot of good music out there.
Individual taste is developed through as many different factors as there are people! It's not fair to say the parent should be influencing the taste of their child only. Because of my parents, I know a lot of Old Country Western, but it works both ways, and because of me, my parents know some of the better rock and alternative songs not played on those old AM radio stations. I helped them re-embrace the Beatles, while they shoved Elvis down my throat so often, I began to enjoy it.
Your kids also shape you and your tastes as much as you theirs. I've read books and watched shows I'd never heard of because of my niece and nephews. Not to be cool, just because they really enjoy them, and want to share with me, and I want them to feel that they can.
It's more than likely that instead of trying to be the "cool mom", your friend has really developed a taste for that genre of music.

Why does it have to be one or the other? Why can't she influence her kids with what she likes and let them influence her, too? And you do what you want with your music.
Butt out.
It does sound like she is trying to be the "cool mom." Be wary of her if this is the case, since she can be a bad influence forother kids, by buying them cigarettes or beer or letting them make out at her house. How far will she go to be popular?
\When my kids were home, our rule was, whoever was driving had charge of the radio. They listened to classical and jazz with me. I listened to Godsmack and Aerosmith with them. We all sang along. Today, my grown sons listen to their favorites, and also some classical and blues and musicals, too. I listen to classical and blues, zydeco, and top 100 pop hits.
I still don't think rap is music, it is cursing with a beat. Trash.
I am sick to death of Barbie Musicals. Trash.

Well my parents influenced what type of music I like. And I influence what type of music they like-so it works both ways. I think that she should like her own type of music unless she really likes rap but I'm not sure of many of my friends parents that like rap. =p I agree that she might just be trying to be the cool mom. But technically thats not always cool-expecially when your kids like rock..like me. lol

I think that it is great that a child could help to expand a parents horizons. Liking or disliking music is not an authority issue.

I believe that the parents should influence the children, but as ch. get older they have their own tastes in things and that should be respected!

My Dad presented me to The grateful lifeless, ABBA, The Beatles, Santo and Johnny, The Mamas and the Papas, and various different others. My mom did not impact my song tastes nevertheless. BQ: very just about each and every band my Dad confirmed me. BQ2: Nope i'm not observing it.

It'd be ideal if it worked both ways... That way everyone learns something new.
