Do I say "are you guys hiring right now" or do I say something more professional?

Hello. I was calling with regards to the ad in ____(whatever paper you saw it in) for the _____(whatever the job is). Is there someone available I may speak with?

I would then ask for the appropriate time to come in and fill out an application. And when you go -- dress up!!! When I was 18, I was hired for a job that 36 other college kids (who were equally qualified) applied for. The reason? The hiring manager remembered that I'd taken the time and pride in my appearance to dress up when I went in to fill out an application. I'd stood out and made a good impression - so yes, that's important - almost as important as a good handshake, a smile and direct eye contact.

Good luck!

I would say something in a more professional manner. I would call them and ask them when a good time would be to come in and fill out an application and talk to the management doing the hiring. When I had an ad in the paper for an employee most of the "are you hiring" calls were ignored because we thought the person who wanted the job showed more interest by walking in....plus it was obvious that we were hiring because of our ad in the paper. Good Luck on your job hunt!

Always be more professional. If they have put a help wanted ad in the paper then they obviously are hiring. One thing I have learned is to find out the name of their human resource manager and mail out a resume.. keep a record of when you send out your resume and the HR Managers name so that you can do a follow up call in about a week from when you first sent it to them. The other thing with the increase number of employers requesting that you email them a copy of your resume it is best to also mail it in just in case there is a glitch in their email system and they don't get the emailed copy of the resume.

What I normally do is something like this.....

Phone rings and answer on other end I say :
(Hi my name is ________
and I'm calling in regards to the help wanted ad I recently found.)

Usually they'll have a quick reply but if not I continue with.....
(I'm just curious to know if you still have any positions open and how I might go about applying for the job.)

Simply say--"Hello, my name is John Smith. I saw your Help Wanted ad in today's paper and I would like to inquire about your application process."
That's it. Whoever is on the other end of the line should direct you from there.
Good luck with the job hunting!

"Hello. My name is -------, and I'm calling in reguard to your ad for a------." They'll probably take charge of the conversation from there. If it's a receptionist, shell ask you to hold while she transfers your call. Pay attention to any names she /he might mutter as she transfers you ("Hold on, while I transfer you to Ms. Michael's office). It might be another dept. w/ another receptionist who might sound like her name is Ms. Michaels, but she might hate Ms. Michaels and transfer you to hell. Just try to remember names, it makes points when points are important. Another safe way to go about it(if it's a big co.) is to just ask for personnel. When you get there, say "Hi my name ..." Most likely they'll ask you to mail, or fax a resume'. Do it!
