because they are rare and a lot of people like rare things. also, 100 y o ppl hav attatchments to things that were around wen they were alive and r willing to pay a lot for them, so ppl charge a lot knowing they will get it. i hope that makes sence.

Well Sorin, pretty much everything that is 100 years old is valuable. You have to remember that the first sewing machine was developed and produced around 1790 and Singer made his first sewing machine in the 1840's. So, in the short history of sewing machines to have one from the early 1900's (and in working condition) is pretty rare.

Actually, it isn't. They're so common these days, what with attics of old relatives getting cleaned out and all, you can usually get one for $40- $50 at auctions or even on EBay.
However, because they were the most popular brand, and the treadle machine still works so well, it is still popular. You can get replacement parts for it directly from Singer.
If someone is trying to tell you a 1906 machine - or older - from Singer is worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars, they are yanking your chain.
