I took the train from San Diego to San Jose a few years ago. It took all day but it was the most luxurious and interesting trip! First of all, the car that goes the full length up the coast is extra-comfy. The food on board was nice. And there's probably no better way to get an overview of the state: everything from peaceful coastal towns, to state penitentiaries, from busy urban areas to farmland is on view. By all means, take the train!
