A sledge hammer. It is frustrating isn't it. You are not alone. I for one is a pencil pusher and get into that situation a lot. However before you get into any kind of expensive solutions, try this one. Go to the hardware store and get a small tube of something called "Screw Magic" (I am sure there are other brand names). It is about the size of an eye drop bottle or even smaller and is quite inexpensive. squeeze some of this sticky stuff onto the head of the screw and apply the screw driver. Worked like magic for me. Best of all, my wife thinks I am brilliant.

There is a tool sold by Sears and some other places that are made just to remove stripped screws. You might try going to any place that sells tools and ask the sales person.

Use the EZ-Out screw extractor as others have suggested.

I would also use a bit of Liquid Wrench on the broken screw to help break any rust on the threads.

You will need to drill it down the center with a bit smaller than the screw. then get what is called an easy-out and lightly tap it in the hole with a hammer then use a wrench to turn the easy out counter clockwise

Is it the threads or the head that's stripped? If it's the head you can buy a screw extractor at most hardware stores.
