Its not carbon monoxide poisoning because we have a tester and no one else gets it apart from me. Its doesnt happen when i am awake only if i am sleeping, for example, my dad comes in from working nights and puts the fire on, immediately when i eventually wake up(which is so hard) i immediatley know its been on as i can feel completely groggy, this feeling lasts all day as if i have been drugged? Is there anything I can do?

You didn't actually confirm that it was a fireplace, but all the advice so far is good. Carbon Dioxide is actually not poisonous unless there's no Oxygen. Carbon Monoxide is extremely dangerous because it consumes Oxygen we need to breathe and will actually take it from your blood if you breathe any in. The fire will burn Oxygen, but if you have good ventilation it shouldn't be a problem.

I've had fireplaces for years and never experienced this problem, so I don't know what to say except that if it's a problem don't let your dad start the fire.

Check the batteries in your carbon monoxide tester, in case they are running
low. I would also get a professional plumber in, even if its to do a service, he
may come across a fault. If your still feeling groggy after the fire check,
see your G.P., just to make sure that you're not coming down with something.
Regards.

I get that groggy feeling if i go to bed and leave the heating on all night - i think it's just too much heat and not enough fresh air! Having the room cooler usually helps or leaving a window open. I doubt it is CO as, not to put a dampener on things, if it were you would probably not be here. Also, if it is only you that feels this way then it's not likely either as surely your Dad would feel it too.

If you have compromised ventilation its probably Co2 buildup making you sleepy. CO is very bad news, it will kill you. Get the gas board in to check your fire. Should be done annually anyway (if not and your house burns down, your home insurance wont pay out, believe me!!!!)

Keep a window cracked open in the room you sleep in. This should help to allieviate your groggy foggy head. You are "gas sensitive".

you need ventilation - there has to be ventilation or all the carbon dioxide and oxygen are used up by the fire.

the fire needs oxygen to burn but so do you do be conscious and alert and to live

make sure the chimmney flue is open and - open the doors inside the house create air circulation
