If you feel you need to set rules maybe you should consider having a room mate at all! we all need to remember the basics of sharing space, common courtesy, and consideration, but if you're setting RULES before you even start, maybe you're not ready to share!

First off, you have to start a dialogue with them. I suggest a visit to the local coffee shop where you can share a coffee and talk about this issue.

During the course of the conversation, make sure to find out what makes your new room mate tick and all and tell them about yourself too, so they will understand much more. Keep it positive too.

As for ground rules... set them up as you talk. Don't force anything on them that they wouldn't force upon you as well. This will help because it will be helpful later on when and if they will need you for something.

Always be a genuine friend. This will send a clear message that you just want the very best and to be happy and get along no matter what. The dialogue will help immensely when you set the rules together, too.
