i went the the hospital last night and was 3cm dialated and having regular contractions. they didnt tell me how effaced i was but 3 weeks ago at my dr appt. they said i was 50% so i am at least that much...they sent me home and now the contractions have all but stopped. i read that drinking castor oil and root beer will induce labor if you are ripe enough...i am ready to have this baby and at my witts end...would now be considered ripe enough for it to possibly work?? i have tried walking sex nip stim...pretty much everything i can think of not only am i uncomfortable but i am constantly nauseaous and i have a 2 year old at home i am taking out my foul moods on. i dont think she has seen her bedtime with me in weeks...i put her to bed as soon as i can and i feel horrible...i cant go on like this anymore and i just want to know if i am willing to try the castor oil and deal with the side effects and deal with the chance that it wont work i would be considered ripe enough???

DO NOT DO CASTOR OIL. It will make you very very sick and can be very dangerous. Eat lots of pineapple and have sex (as uncomftable as it is) Youare on your way into labor any min. Only one more cm and they will bring you into the dr. That could be the next 24 hours. Just double check your bag and go get a prenatal massage.

I've heard the only reason castor oil works is because it causes movement in the bowels. What about doing an enema? They used to do that routinely (and some places still do) when a woman goes into the hospital for labor. I think it would have the same effect and wouldn't be ingested to cause the baby any side effects. I had a very long time of contractions with my daughter and nothing seemed to help. (Didn't try to the enema--heard about it later) I had contractions for more than 48 hrs before they became steady enough to admit me to the hospital. Good luck and hopefully it happens soon!

It's called "Patients".........
Let not your frustrations and anxiety's cause you to lose faith that the baby will come when she's ready!
You know, the baby has to do just as much work as you do to come down that birth channel and get ready for it's grand entrance into this world.

I suggest that you get someone to help you. Friend, family member, mate.
They need to give you some time to yourself so that you can RELAX so that nature can take it's course.
If that's not possible, then after putting your child to bed, put on some comforting music, light some candles, sit on the couch or in a chair, lean your head back, close your eyes, and breatheeeeeeeeeeeee in through your nose, and let it out through your mouth. Do this very slowly about 7-8 times. This should help you to unwind and find some comfort.

I know it's very difficult when your full term, big belly and so uncomfortable. You just want it over with, but please DO NOT take any Castor Oil. This is not natural and may cause severe problems for you.
Wish I were closer and knew you as I would defiantly help you out with your dilemma....
Please take care, breathe and have faith that it will be over very soon...

Best of Luck!

There are few side effects of castor oil(just diahhrea type stuff). if you are full term, then I would say it's pretty safe. If you are all ready 3 cm, then it might just do the job. The castor oil works by irritating your bowels, which in turns irritates your uterus and causes it to have contractions in some cases. Its REALLY nasty and you have to drink a lot of it. I tried it and I started getting contractions, but I don't think my cervix was ripe enough for it to start anything. One other thing(i knw you said you all ready had sex but) be on top when haivng sex, and LOTS of penetration(which irritates the cervix, causing contractions possibly).

Don't do the castor oil. I drank it, mixed in orange juice, and it was so disgusting that I threw it up in minutes! I later tried a small glass of red wine, and that worked by nightfall. Maybe it was the relaxation part, or just the alcohol thinning out the blood to help contractions along, I'm not sure. I asked my doctor beforehand, and he said it was fine, and it won't hurt ths baby. Alot of people are so scared of wine in pregnancy, but think about the epidural! That's way worse. So try the wine, and see if within a day or so it doesn't help start labor. If nothing else, you'll be relaxed enough to deal with the mood swings. Good luck!

Okay, so castor oil...bad idea. I'm gonna tell you what my OB told me both times...Walk your butt off, have a nice glass of wine with dinner, and have sex with your partner. They say that walking induces labor, and I can attest to that. The glass of wine willnot hurt the baby, but it will help you to relax and that means less stress on you and the baby. As far as the sex part goes, believe it or not there is a chemical in sperm that actually causes the cervix to dialate. I hope this will help you, but remember that the more you stress, the longer that baby's gonna hang out. Try to stay calm and relax and nature will take it's course, but there is never anything wrong with helping nature along. Good luck and congratulations.

I have never heard of this oil thing until I started up here. I would not recomend it. most doctors do not want anybody to self induce before your 40 weeks. There are other things you can try. (site below)
But keep in mind the longer the baby stays in you the more healthy it will be. Less problems later. But I know how the last few days are. If I knew how far along you were then I would be able to suggest talking to your doctor about being induced. I a sure that he would rather you take a safe rout. talk to them first before you do anything!!

Please don't use castor oil. On behalf of all labor and delivery nurses I beg you. It will give you horrible diarrhea, and if you coincidentaly go into labor the same day, you'll be strapped to the bed with horrible diarrhea.

You didn't say how far along you are. Your cervix is favorable, but if you're only like 35 weeks, you shouldn't do anything. If you're closer to term, you can try all the things you've already tried again. this baby will come when it's ready.

I am in the same boat as you. I spent the night in the hospital with regular contractions, 3cm dialated.. then it all stopped. I have tried everything... I think all of the self inducing methods are just myths. I am a server. So all I do is walk! Still no baby.

well I was at 36 weeks and dialated to 2 and 70 percent effaced the next week i was at three. The next week I was at five. I was walking around and not having contractions at five! I treid everythingyou are going to ry and nothing wokred. Finallymy doctor induced me because I wasn't having reg contractions.

Its hard to say if you are ripe or not...you can be effaced and still have a hard cervix. YOur cervix has to be soft and flexible and there is no way to know that unless your doctor tells ou.
