1/8 * 4 = 4/8

when shortening it with 4, you get 1/2.

1 x 4 = 4
8 x 1 = 8
4/8 = 1/2
= 1/2

in this case you are multiplying a fraction (1/8) by a whole number (4).

what you do is to make them both fractions....to make a whole number a fraction, you simply put it over 1....

so now you are multiplying 1/8 X 4/1

multiplying top X top and put over bottom X bottom
so this gives 1X4 over 8X1 which is 4/8 which is one half (1/2) as four-eighths of something is one half

in multiplying fractions the rule is top X top, bottom X bottom
a whole number like 4 can be changed to 4/1
