Thats the magic of peer networks :) And it is not only for free music, it is for free anything that can be processed by a computer.. (video music programs pictures etc.)

No one is guilty of sharing copyrighted material in a Gnutella network (limewire uses gnutella network), because as a humanbeing you can share your own goods with a friend of yours, and no one can blame you. So peer to peer networks benefits from this gap :)

How does this work??
Simple. You install limewire (or anyother P2P program) to your PC. That program knows how to locate the address of at least one other peer computer. When you are connected your computer tells that other peer:

Your PC: Heyy man! i am here in the network and you know what? i also know a few more peers' addresses..
Other PC: Welcome buddy.. give me a second i will tell my friends that you are here in our network..

so, every computer in gnutella network is connected to eachother.

When you search for a file, your computer says to the peers he knows:

Your PC: Hey my friend! i need the file named 'blahblahblah', do you have it??
The other peer shares it if it has it.. if it doesnt have it, it asks to his peers about the file, this way your query can go thru whole network..

Peace

P.S. LimeWire does not install any malware, spam or virus things.. it is a nice software, strong but the files in P2P network is polluted by the companies who owns the copyrights of the shared materials..

To be specific,
Companies want to stop P2P networks but they cannot, it is technically very difficult and laws do not allow them to stop it. So what do they do?? They pollute the gnutella network with crap files which has normal names (a song's name, program name, name of the file that is copyrighted), viruses and spams.. this way they want to discourage p2p users.

How does it work?

Peer-to-Peer or Person-to-Person (P2P)

The labels are trying to stop P2P but there is no law that governs the internet at the moment. They will need to find a loophole in the actions of people online in order to prosecute anybody in it. For example, a person who has bought a CD decided to "share" the files on Limewire. The labels can say, well you are stealing copyright materials. But copyright materials are only goverened if you use for public performance without permission, made for profit without permission or duplication without permission. As the person sharing, you are not duplicating without permission. As the person downloading, if you duplicate the media and sell it, then you are violating the copyright law. In a sense, it is a very muddy battle and you dont want to get yourself involved. You are technically robbing the artists their rights to sell their music. You should really buy music like the rest of us. But that's just my thought.

Completely stop it when you aren't using it, and keep the collection of shared music it can see down to a minimum number of files.

It works by looking for your sought music on all the other users' collections of shared music at that moment on the network, then it obtains parts of your desired file from all the sources that are available and assembles them in the correct sequence on your computer.

By the way, Limewire doesn't install any adware or spyware on your computer. It is a fine piece of software.

It is free and Illegal. But enough of that, you file share with other people. Basically you give other people the music off your computer and they share theirs with you. No selling just sharing. But you have to download Limewire and it is very easy to use. Pick a song or artist and it will go and search other computers for you and show you all the results. You choose the one you want and download it and it is yours.

Tho limewire will let you share files, it is not legal to share copyrighted files, and to the person that claimed it loads adware on your machine, that is an outright fallacy!

Limewire LLC has already been attacked by the RIAA and are making concessions to them. But they'll eventually be buried into the ground, like the RIAA wants them to.
