Oxycodone is just a very effective pain killer.
Don't be scared to take medicine your doctor has prescribed for you. Chronic pain itself can actually be very bad for your body: because your body produces stress hormones which can hinder the body's healing process.
In our society we have a large dichotomy, on one hand we have a strong % culture" of street users. But on the other hand many people who *should* legitimatly use a for a medical purpose are scared to because of the other part of the population.
There is a word used in the medical community: Opiophobic. It means "fear of narcotics", but in general use it is more like "disaproval of painkillers even when appropriate".
There is a lot of back and forth discussion with physicians of risk versus benefit of narcotics (including oxycodone). Many fear that the medicine is not being prescribed when it is needed because of a cultural association with recreational use.
I would take the medicine your doctor prescribes. Exactly as prescribed. No less - No more. If you find yourself getting irratable between or before your dose, and wanting to take it early. Talk to your doctor. Either your pain is not being managed effectivly, or you are getting dependant. Either case requires your physicians assistance.

Whoever said this was an "anelgesic" is off their frickin rocker. Oxy is an opiate, and is essentially heorin in the pill form. It's extremely effective and addictive. Just because your doctor gives it to you doesn't mean squat.
Have you tried other pain relief meds? If you've tried other meds with no success, then try this one.
How long is the cyst going to be causing the pain? Till it's removed? Is it going to be able to be removed?
If you have a very short timeline for taking this med (like doing it for a week before you go into surgery) then great. However, what is the long term solution? Surely he doesn't expect you to be doped up for life?

My fiance has bad pain in her back and stomach. She began taking oxycodon. She's been taking it almost everyday for at least half a year now, probably even more. She claims she needs it. I think she is addicted to it. She says the pain is too strong without it, and by taking oxycodon is the only way she can feel normal again. Now, I know she has chronic pain... but I feel there should be alternative methods to get over pain that do not involve incredibly addictive substances. Her Dr. says she should keep taking it because in her condition (she has a chronic metabolism illness) she needs pain killers. I don't know what to think but my gut feeling is that you should stay away from it. I don't think everyone has the willpower to stop using this substance.. it seems too powerful.

Well it all depends on the amount that you take and the length of time that you take it. I would say anything more that 2-3 weeks could make you either psychologically dependent and maybe physical dependent, but then again you stated that your not prone to addiction so I wouldn't worry about. Just don't abuse it. Too much of anything is a bad thing ya know.

When using an analgesic to treat severe pain it is highly unlikely that you will become addicted. Take the oxycodone (note spelling) and relieve your pain.

The only problem I had with it was a terrible upset stomach so I would have to make sure I ate a full meal before taking it. Other than that, it did relieve quite a bit of pain and keep me relaxed somewhat.

If you take it as directed and for no longer than 7-10 days, you'll be fine. Any more than that and you will become physically addicted--if not psychologically addicted.

Just don't abuse it, and you will be fine. Abuse = taking more than recommended and before the suggested time. You can talk to your doctor about if needed.
