That sounds like a harddisk problem.. You have bad sectors on your hard drive which means you need to run a checkdisk.
furthermore,i think those bad sectors that your HDD cannot read, were keeping your personal settings :) what a bad luck.

You do need to run the Chkdsk. This should repair any problems your disk has. If it can't you have serious drive problems and you will need to take it back to have it worked on, unless you know how to reload your hard drive.

The first problem has to do with your logon profile that gets you into windows in the first place. It is trying to load you logon but there is a problem so it loads the default.

I have the same problem on my laptop and have yet to figure it out. Sorry no help there but you are still able to run so you may want to keep playing with that logon til you figure it out.

Is this computer on a network? It sounds like it was once part of a network in which a Domain Controler was used and like you at one time had a roaming profile... Is that the case? If you once had a roaming profile and/or currently don't or don't want to then... Click on your "Start" menu, Right click on the "My Computer" icon then Select the "Advanced" Tab at the top of that window, then click the "Settings" button under "User Profiles", Select your user profile and click "Change Type" button, select "Local Profile" then "ok" on all the windows... This should fix the problem if it is related to a broken Roaming Profile.... If not your HD could be going bad or part of your OS could be damaged... You might have to use an OS install CD to repair windows in such case.
