Scenario : there is a room full of 100 people. They are variety of all ages, incomes, ethnicities, etc. 1 person in the room is needy (could be hungry, homeless, ill, whatever).

2 possible solutions :

1. A leader in the room passes around a collection. They ask each person to give as much as they can. Each person can give any amount ($0, $1, $10).

2. A leader in the room goes to each person and demands $1. He threatens to throw any person that does not pay in jail. He justifies his actions by saying it's only $1, anyone can afford that, and we must help the needy.

The question: Which solution embodies the idea of freedom? Is there a moral difference between them? Can this scenario be applied to how our government's management of social services?

Both solutions assume a top down authoritarian structure. They are both dictatorship.
How about the people in the room take up a collection for the poor guy and have somebody they choose to represent them give it to him.
Better yet would be if they looked at the poor guy, decided among themselves that he needed a job and gave him the job of making speeches at parades, harmless and not very demanding stuff, this job could be called leader.
That is how democracy is supposed to function.
The fact that you could frame these solutions and ask which is freedom shows that you don't have or understand it.

Ok to answer this one and to toss my own spin on it. Clever wording by the way. If everyone got pissed off because of #2 I suggest you read Neal Bortz book on the Fair Tax.

1. Is Democracy

2 Is Socialisim ( WELCOME TO THE USA) If you dont believe me try and not pay your taxes. They will take everything you have and lock you in prison. To settle your share.

3 is Commmunisim where the government takes all and distributes the wealth to the people according to their job.

Freedom is a unrealistic word used very loose, this pretend word is how our goverment gets us to pay taxes, ask permission to make changes to our so called home by enforcing us to get permits or permission and pay for permission...Freedom is within it is knowing you have a set of belifes that are solid and not built around falsehood and knowing that with it comes the responsibility of doing what you dont want to do most of the time in a comprimise of balance...................

Sounds like Communism to me. Enforced distribution of wealth. Wait, that is Communism.

Are you implying that freedom can be bought with the dollar?
