I've heard that it depends on the person.

I've heard from one source that 8 hours is plenty for most.

I've heard from another source that "some people need 10 hours of sleep just like they need a 10 size shoe."

I've also heard "Sleep as little as possible, and get the most out of life. You can sleep when you're dead."

I notice a big difference between when I get 6 hours and 8 hours though. 6 hours or less, and I can still function, but not as well. 12 hours and I'm feeling great, but if you consistently do that, you'll sleep half your life away. 8 hours seems to be a nice balance. But, that's just me.

in many situations new fish will take it sluggish adjusting to their new ecosystem and could refuse nutrition and be skittish for the 1st few days. notwithstanding, bettas will oftentimes look "sleepy" or "depressed" whilst their temperature drops too low. The betta is a tropical fish and their temperature could be maintained between 78F-82F meaning room temperature isn't adequate. An aquarium heater is maximum in many situations needed to maintain the temperature perfect and relentless. A single betta could be in a pair of 5 gallon tank with a delicate clear out and aquarium heater. in the experience that your fish would not have those issues, then that is why he's now in misery.

It varies. For some guys as low as three hours a night, for others as much as ten. Usually in the range 5-8 hours is enough.
