I assume you have wood siding.

If so, he's probably coming back and pecking because he's finding food there. Which means you have grubs or insects in your siding. Look closely at the places he's pecking. Are there any signs of insect damage? You may need to go over the whole exterior of the house and spray bug spray in every crevice and hole, and then seal them with something. A friend had this happen once. He had T-111 wood siding on the house, and the bugs got into voids under the surface of the panels. He had long rows of holes pecked all along the voids.

Build (or buy) a woodpecker house. I had a woodpecker (Downy) making holes all over my house and as soon as i put up a house for it, it quit pecking on my house.
No guns, hoses, or pesticides...just a home of it's own!

Not only is it hilarious but could add to your Halloween decor!

Other than that I'd reccomend a fake owl on the roof.

This product may work too... http://www.birdbusters.com/woodpecker_spray.html

That woodpecker is telling you that you have a potential problem, you have some type of insect he is trying to get at. I would call an exterminator, and show him where the bird has been pecking, and let him take it from there !!!!!!!!!!

You should be more worried WHY he is there. Woodpeckers go after the bugs that live in rotten wood. Sounds like part of your house is rotten! Check your eaves, overhands, window sills, and any other exposed wood areas.

It is not right, but I guess shoot it with a pellet gun. He may be going after bugs in the wood, maybe some insecticide would help. Halloween is coming up, you can try a scarecrow, set it right out where he has been digging.

A gun would do the trick as long as you hit it and not your house. You could try spraying it with a waterhose if you don't want to harm it. This may make it go away. You could also buy a cat.

DO NOT KILL. The reason the bird is doing this is what we call ' mating ritual'. He needs a girlfriend. Since there doesn't seem to be one around, and unfortunately, he will return to your house, we used a power horn, you know, the ones used at football games. But killing a living creature because we humans find it 'annoying' because it is doing what comes naturally, is gross to me.

Wrist rocket? Hit it before it gets to the house or as it is flying away so as not to damage the house.
