I would take enough clothes to get me through the first couple of days while I shopped for new stuff. I'd use my suitcase to bring books, music and perhaps some Oreo's...just in case they don't have any.

I'd take a week's worth of underwear. About 6 articles of outer clothing that are interchangable. 2 pairs of shoes. Something to sleep in. Basic hygiene stuff.
A couple of cherished pictures. Cell phone charger. I think that's about it.

The lighter you travel the happier you will be.
Unencumbered is the key!
By the way, I tried to e-mail you about Italy and your address said Opps and did not go through.

leave most clothes till you get there like hope said,
but my friend went to yugoslavia a while back and he took one camcorder blank tape.
when he got there he found out there is nowhere there to buy more.
so he was there a couple weeks and only got like 2 hours of video memories!

American snack-food (chips, etc) and some clothes- you'll be surprised at how much you will miss the little things- buy everything else there.

I would take an empty suitcase, and buy all new Italian shoes, clothes, and take it home.
