Mercury is a naturally occuring chemical extracted from the mineral Cinnabar. It is used in a lot of industry applications. mercury switches, vapor lamps, thermometers, a only a few very small applications for mercury.

Mercury had been used and is stilled used to almagamate precious metals that are still small to detect through visible means. Mercury is smelted off in a vapor collector that recondenses mercury into a liquid for capturing it for reuse in the amalgamation processes. Once removed from the amalgam the precious mineral (such as gold) is fairly ready to smelt into .999 through other chemical processes.
