I had my baby at 34 weeks. All I can say is that is takes time and every baby is different. My daughter was in the NICU for about 2 weeks. Everyday will be a new milestone for the baby. The first thing is the breathing... then the baby must gain a certain amount of weight, learn to eat well from a bottle, maintain its temerature in an open crib. I remember too that the babys oxygen intake must be stable. There is a number on one of the machines that shouldnt go below 90 i think. My memory is a lil foggy... those were hard days. Im sure the baby will be just fine... I heard that 28 weeks is borderline.

I had my baby boy at 30 wks - 3lbs 12oz (he was a bit big for his age) He stayed in the NICU for 8 weeks - he is now a year old and doing great! He is about 32" and 23 lbs now. 32 wks is good - most important issue usually is the lungs - should be developed pretty well at that time. Be prepared for some ups and downs - they will just be concentrating on the baby breathing on her own without added oxygen, eating on her own (tubes first then eventually the breast or bottle) and gaining weight steadily. It was a challenging time for me and my husband - a new mom having to see her precious baby in the hospital then having to leave and come back again and again is hard. But we made it through and thankfully all is OK. It will take time, but chances are really good the baby will be OK - especially if there were no complications, etc. The baby will just need time and lots of love....Good Luck to you and your cousin - and congrats on the new (albeit early) arrival!

My son was born at 33w gestation and he's fine. He's 6 months old now and going strong. He was in the NICU for the first month of his life, on the vent for 4 days and then off of it and on oxygen for 2 more days and then to the stepdown NICU for the rest of that month learning how to maintain his bodyheat and how to eat from a bottle.
He came home on an apnea monitor, Reglan and Caffine. The Reglan kept him from spitting up, the Caffine kept his heart rate from dropping and the apnea monitor let us know if his heart rate ever did drop(which it didn't). Before he was 2 months old he was off the caffine. By 2 months he was off the monitor and now at 6 months he's almost completely off the Reglan.
My baby was 4lbs 6oz when he was born. I do have a cousin who was 1lb 6oz when he was born and he has some complications from it, he has diabetes, he's deaf and he has to wear braces on his legs, but he's a happy, and otherwise healthy 13 year old boy.

First of all let me say congratulations on the new baby. I had my son at 32 weeks and he turned 12 yesterday Sept 27. Technology today is way better than it was 12 years ago. The answer to your question I think the baby will be fine but tell your cousin not to be scared of her because she is so small. she needs to feel her parents love right now. The doctors told us to hold, talk and communicate with our son and that was what we did. Preemies babies tend to be a Lil smaller than the rest like my son he is the oldest in his class but the smallest and don't let size fool you he can keep up with the rest of them. Never stop praying for her speedy recovery and for her organs to grow healthy. God Bless You and take care

extra desirable than probable your infant might stay to tell the tale, yet i would not particularly say she could be a "healthful newborn." At 32 weeks, the lungs are actually not particularly totally progressed. additionally, preemies have an inclination to forget approximately to respire (apnea) and function worry eating. My pricey buddy's twins have been born at 32 weeks. They stayed in the NICU for 29 and 21 days respectively. My twins have been born at 35 wks 3 days and nonetheless had some gentle apnea and eating issues. yet they went homestead at 5 days. ultimate of luck.

My sister's step son was born two months early and weighed about 3 lbs and he is alive and well. However, he is very small for his age and has health problems because his mother did drugs, smoked, and drank while she was pregnant. Babies can survive outside the uterus at 6 months gestation with intensive care. Good luck to your cousin and her baby.

Hello Joy,
I had my daughter at 34or 35 weeks and It was hard for me to leave my little angel in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit because after you have your baby you are expected to take your baby home but you constantly have to go to the hospital everyday to see your little one in an incubator when you rather see your baby at home that's a hard feeling but luckily my daughter didn't have any respiratory problems a blessing from God. I'm sure that your cousin's baby will be alright just keep praying that she makes her weight so that she could go home.

Many babies survive at this gestation b/c of great medical technology. Baby may not be able to come home for a while but will most likely be ok.

They really have come along on the technolegy to save these small baby's. I think you have a better chance of the baby surviving, but can't say 100%. Remember to give the baby a lot of love. This really helps the child.
