what to slove here?!

ok... if 1/4 is less than 3+y, then we can write:

1/4 < 3+y
1/4-3 < y or -2 3/4 < y

that is y is more than - 2 3/4

First write the sentence into an equation:

1/4<3+y

then multiply both sides by 4 to get rid of the fraction (remember to distribute the 3 into (3+y):
1<12+3y

subtract 12 from both sides:
-11<3y

divide both sides by 3
-11/3 or
y>-11/3

y is greater than -11/3
