a vignette can be a chapter in a book that gives insight/clarifies a character or setting,
or it can be a decoration in the margins of a book, or to separate chapters,
So a gothic vignette could be a part of a "gothic" i.e. victorian horror story,
or else the paintings in the margins of a missal/Bible or other manuscript in the gothic style.
