The darker a cloud the more rain it holds. Moisture is drawn up by the sun, as the cloud is blown along by winds they gather along different pressures, IE high and low. After awhile the rain will be to heavy, releasing the moisture as rain.

Clouds are supported by rising air. When the cloud droplets begin to collect together and form raindrops there mass increases and therefore the strength of the rising air needs to increase to hold them. If it can't keep the drops suspended in the cloud you have rain.

Thunderstorms have the strongest updrafts (rising air) and you may have noticed that the raindrops form these storms are quite large.

When the cloud accumulates enough precipitation, the water vapor that makes the clouds gets heavy and falls. Clouds don't "know" when to release rain. They are inanimate.
