in talking abour movie theme's what is a outward spine and an inward spine?

in my film class I have to define what a characters outward and inward spine is, however I can't figure out what this means and I can't find it in the book anywhere, although the terms must exist because why would my teacher ask about them.

They probably didn't mean "spine" literally, it sounds like their asking the outward demeanor/actions/etc. versus their inner dialogue/motivations/thoughts.
