I used to obsess and, yes, it does take on a life of it's own!!
I would get summer jobs as a teen to earn money to buy things and then toss them, buy more and then toss them, again and again. Guilt or shame would cause me to toss everything into the trash, then a few months later I would miss it and bought my gurly things all over again. This went on for most of my young adult life when I lived at home with my parents. I finally stopped doing that when, after many boys, and many years, I had an epiphany. It wasn't the clothes, I just liked men! After accepting that I kept my things hidden until I moved out on my own. Sometimes I would rent a hotel room and dress up on the weekends and order pizza or chineese. I think deep inside I'm a girl who was born a boy. Again, it just seems natural.
Now I'm much older and I dress 24/7, I'm pre-op, and live with 2 gay men, who I care-take for, and we enjoy each other's company. We go to parties, dinners, movies, shopping, everything. It's great! They like me and there is no s*x involved. But if they wanted it, I'd be more than glad to accomodate!!

Anything can become an obsession, it doesn't mean the thing itself is bad. It can be worse if society frowns upon it and you feel compelled to hide it. Then it's much easier to have to become obsessive behavior.
Crossdressing isn't wrong or bad. If a man shares my love for pretty things, it's actually a bonus...more we have in common. I have known crossdressers and they did not obsess about it. I think it has more to do with how accepting the people in their lives are about it, not the act itself.

Its an addiction, or obsession, that affects some people severely. Neurotransmitters are firing in the brain like an addiction to drugs. Then you have to go further and further. If it goes dorment its because you fight it off. Otherwise it will eat at you until you decide to go feme 24/7. After that you have to deal with depression.

I used to cross dress but I grew out of it. It doesn't make you feminine. Only hormones can.
I was never obsessed but I thought about it a lot. I would say it was a compulsion for a while.

from what ive seen.
it has the ability to dormat itself for some periods of time, while other times it peeks up, much like a drug addiction.
