a 5 game series would work out better, you can win one a Yankee stadium and the wrap it up at hoe. The Yankees have an advantage in a seven game series - their bats can come alive slowly. In a 5 game series it's too short for them to relax for one game.

As a Yankee fan, I would rather meet the Twins in a seven game series. So I guess facing the Tigers in 5 wouldn't be out of the question. I think that the Twins are more dangerous than the Tigers in 5. Reason, the starting pitching. The Yankees have the experience and patience to wear starting pitchers down, and by the time the 5th inning hits, the manager is already calling on his bullpen. If this is the case, in a seven game series especially, the Yankees will have completely worn down any bullpen, be it either the Tigers or the Twins. How do the Twins gain the advantage in 5? I repeat ...starting pitching. In a short series, I feel that they have the necessary talent to eliminate the Yankees, provided the pitching is hot, thus giving them the advantage, however small, still an advantage.

I'm not a Tigers' fan, but I don't think it really matters about the length of the series if they play the Yankees. I personally think the Yankees are, at this point, the superior team, but that doesn't really matter in a 5-or-7-game series.
The Tigers could easily defeat the Yanks at either length, and could lose just as easily. I guess that I'd probably take the 5-gamer and hope that my guys get hot for a short series.

you do realize you need to beat Oakland to get to face either the Yanks or Twins if you win the division and beating the A's won't be easy.
They undoubtedly have the second half AL MVP in Frank Thomas and a pitching staff with Zito and now healthy Rich Harden. Not to mention closer Huston Street is back and looking good.
Teams that play small ball and have above avg pitching usually are dangerous come playoff time so watch out for the A's.
As per your question, I think they have a better chance against the Yanks in a 5 game series. The adrenaline in the young blood of the A's is better suited for a short series. Just look at how there season has gone. They started out on fire but because of the length of the season have slowly drifted off. In a short series the adrenaline could get them a win on the road in NY and then 2 wins at home whereas the longer the series goes, the more I think it favours the Yanks.

Not a Tigers fan, as you know, but I think it would be best for the Tigers to play the Yankees in 7, that way the Tigers can beat up on Randy Johnson twice, and the Tigers over a 7 game span I think can matchup better on the pitching end.
Think about like this: If you can matchup Justin Verlander vs Chien Ming Wang twice, you'll probably split the two games:
Yankees - 1
Tigers - 1
If you can throw Kenny Rogers vs Mike Mussina twice, again, you can probably split two games:
Yankees - 2
Tigers - 2
Then if you can pitch Robertson or Bonderman vs Randy Johnson two games, you'll probably win both:
Tigers - 4
Yankees - 2
Thats my prediction of it.....
Now if my Mets can start hitting, ugh, im disgusted right now.

i think for the tigers it really doesnt matter because every game they will have a good starter. The reason Twins want to play the yankees now is because all the teams believe they have to get through the yankees to go to the world series and if they can put santana out their twice that will give them their best chance. But the opening game would be santana vs wang in new york where wang is like santana in the metrodome. For the tigers it doesnt matter because they can match up everyday with a good starter against another good starter. And for the guy who said johnson would get rocked, he forgets johnson has pitched very good against the tigers this year.

The Twins would rather play them for five. Santana's two wins means alot more in a five games series than a seven game series. So I would rather see the Tigers have to play them in a seven-game series given that the Yankees beat the Twins and the Tigers beat the A's. Neither of which is a guarentee.

Not a Tigers fan, but you'd probably be better off facing NYY in a 5 game series. Beating them 3 times is easier than 4. You also don't want them to be in the ALCS and so close to the World Series. Get them early.

Does it really matter. The Yankees own the Tigers this season with a 5-2 record against them. The yankees have put up 38 to the Tigers 23 and the Yankees have 2 shutouts to the Tigers none. It's not looking so hot for teh Tigers vs. the Yankees.

any inferior team has a better chance against the Yanks in a 5 game series. It's the law of averages.
